Butte County Criminal Records
A Butte County criminal court record is the court case file, not the law-enforcement booking file. The court case file may include the charging instrument, public probable-cause material, arraignment entries, pleas, motions, orders, hearing dates, disposition, judgment, sentence, probation conditions, fines, costs, restitution, bond, and payment status. Arrest records, jail custody records, and statewide criminal-history reports are separate records held by other agencies.
Criminal matters in Butte County route through Idaho's unified trial-court system. District Court and Magistrate Division functions are handled locally at the Butte County Courthouse and searched through Idaho iCourt when public. Misdemeanors, infractions, preliminary felony proceedings, and many high-volume local matters are tied to the Magistrate Division. Felony case stages can involve preliminary proceedings and District Court activity. For a broader noncriminal record search, use Butte County court records.
The Idaho Judicial Branch Clean Slate Act page is the source for the criminal-records image below.
Clean Slate matters because an older Butte County criminal court record that once appeared publicly may later be shielded from public disclosure.
Search Butte Criminal Cases
The main case-status search for Butte County criminal court records is the Idaho iCourt Portal. Use Smart Search for a defendant name or case number. Use Search Hearings for a criminal hearing calendar. Use Make Payments only after confirming the criminal or traffic case is eligible. The iCourt payment guide says online payment is not available for sealed cases, cases in collections, or mandatory-appearance cases before the required appearance occurs.
- Open iCourt and select Smart Search for a criminal court record lookup.
- Search by case number if known. If using a defendant name, verify the Butte County and court context.
- Review the public docket for charges, arraignment entries, hearing dates, motions, disposition, sentence, and payment status.
- Use Search Hearings when the main question is an upcoming criminal hearing date or time.
- Request certified copies or non-downloadable documents from the Butte County court clerk at the courthouse when needed.
The court case search should not be treated as a statewide background check. Idaho State Police Bureau of Criminal Identification handles Idaho criminal-history dissemination under state law. Court records show case activity in the judicial file; a BCI history is a different record product with different rules and limits.
Butte Criminal Case Flow
A criminal case file grows as the case moves through court. The charging document starts the court accusation. Arraignment records the first formal hearing where the charge and plea are addressed. Pretrial entries can show motions, continuances, bond issues, discovery disputes, or other orders. The case then ends by plea, trial, dismissal, or another disposition, followed by sentencing if there is a conviction.
Case flow: Charges Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial / Motions › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
| Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Charges filed | The prosecutor files a complaint, information, or other charging instrument that starts the criminal court case. |
| Arraignment | The court addresses the charge and plea. The docket may show guilty, not guilty, or another plea event. |
| Pretrial / motions | Parties may file motions, ask for continuances, address bond, or set hearings. |
| Plea or trial | The case may resolve by plea or proceed to trial, depending on the charge and court orders. |
| Disposition | The court records the outcome, such as guilty, dismissed, acquitted, amended, or another final result. |
| Sentencing | If convicted, the record may show jail, prison, probation, fines, costs, restitution, and other terms. |
For a closer look at the accusation itself before final outcome, use Butte County arrest records and court charges. That page focuses on charges after arrest and the charging-document side of the record.
Butte Criminal Record Fields
A criminal court record is useful only if the fields are read in context. A charge field shows an accusation. A disposition field shows how that accusation ended. A sentence field applies after conviction. A payment field may show a balance due, but it does not prove the same thing as a judgment or sentence. The public iCourt record can show many of these items, but full documents are not guaranteed online.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case number | The iCourt identifier for the Butte County criminal court record. |
| Defendant | The person charged in the criminal case, subject to redaction or restriction rules. |
| Court | Butte County District Court or Magistrate Division in Idaho's Seventh Judicial District. |
| Charges | The offense descriptions or charging entries filed in court. |
| Plea | The defendant's formal answer, such as guilty or not guilty, when public. |
| Docket events | Complaint, information, arraignment, motion, order, continuance, hearing, judgment, sentencing, notice, or payment plan. |
| Disposition | The final outcome of a charge or case, such as conviction, dismissal, acquittal, amendment, or other court result. |
| Sentence | Jail, prison, probation, fines, costs, restitution, conditions, or other punishment after conviction. |
| Financial status | Fines, fees, costs, restitution, payment plan, balance due, or bond information in eligible workflows. |
| Restrictions | Sealed, shielded, juvenile, presentence, personal identifier, or ICAR 32 exempt information may be hidden. |
Charges and Convictions
A charge is an accusation filed in court. A conviction is an outcome after a guilty plea, verdict, or other finding that supports judgment and sentence. Butte County criminal court records may show charges that were reduced, amended, dismissed, or ended in acquittal. That is why a criminal record must be read through the disposition and sentence fields, not just the opening charge entry.
| Point | Charge | Conviction |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | An accusation filed by the prosecutor in court. | A court outcome after plea, verdict, or finding. |
| Timing | Appears near the start of the case. | Appears at disposition and sentencing stages. |
| Proof level | Supported by charging standards and probable-cause process. | Requires guilty plea, verdict, or legal finding. |
| Record risk | Can remain visible even if later dismissed unless sealed, shielded, or restricted. | Can affect sentencing, probation, fines, restitution, and driver or licensing consequences. |

The statute source supports the distinction between ordinary criminal identification records and records shielded from public disclosure.
Public Criminal Record Access
Access to Butte County criminal court records is governed first by ICAR 32 and court orders. Idaho public-record statutes also matter for agency records. Idaho Code section 74-102 presumes public records are open for inspection and copying unless a statute says otherwise. Idaho Code section 74-103 sets public agency response duties for records requests. Court case access is more specific because ICAR 32 defines which judicial records are public, exempt, sealed, or redacted.
State criminal-history records are separate. Idaho Code section 67-3008 controls criminal-history dissemination by Idaho State Police. The research notes that public access to Idaho criminal history uses name and date-of-birth identification and that juvenile histories are not included unless adjudicated as an adult. A court docket can show a public Butte County case. A BCI record can summarize criminal-history data under state dissemination rules.

Sealed Shielded Expunged
Idaho records language should be used with care. A sealed court record is closed to the public by law or court order. A shielded criminal record under Idaho's Clean Slate Act is prevented from public disclosure, but it is not destroyed. Expungement means removal or destruction where Idaho law allows it, and the research glossary treats it as distinct from shielding. For Butte County, Clean Slate is the current practical reform most directly tied to public criminal case access.
| Point | Sealed | Shielded / Clean Slate | Expunged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public visibility | Closed from public view by law or court order. | Hidden from public disclosure if the court grants shielding. | Removed or destroyed where law allows. |
| Record existence | Still exists in the court system. | Still exists and can be accessed by authorized people. | May be treated as removed depending on statute and order. |
| Who may still access | Depends on court rule and order. | Judges, clerks, court staff, law enforcement, prosecutors, and the defendant for authorized purposes. | Depends on the expungement authority. |
| Butte County path | Ask the court about sealed-record access or court order requirements. | Use the Idaho Judicial Branch petition and file in the case court. | Do not assume availability without a specific Idaho law or order. |
Idaho's Clean Slate Act page says eligible people may petition to shield records if at least five years have passed since completion of sentence, including probation, parole, fines, and restitution. Only one offense, or one set of offenses from a single incident or transaction, may be shielded. If granted, public iCourt access should no longer expose the case record except as permitted by rule. If shielding is later revoked, the record may become publicly accessible again to the extent ICAR 32 allows.

Restricted Butte Criminal Records
Not every criminal case field is public. The iCourt portal notice says sealed cases and ICAR 32 exempt information do not appear, and sealed event entries are not visible in search results. Juvenile records have special restrictions. Presentence investigation reports are presumptively sealed under Idaho criminal practice and ICAR 32. Search and arrest warrant support can be exempt while pending return. Personal identifiers, victim details, medical data, protected minor information, and safety information may be redacted or withheld.

BCI background records may answer a different question than a Butte County court case file, so the correct source depends on the record need.
Note: A public criminal case search should not be used as a regulated employment, tenant, credit, or insurance background report.
